Besides being a headline grabber, Salman Khan also makes the audience flock to theatres in droves. Filmfare gives a tongue-firmly-in-cheek profile of the rise and rise of the Khan who also suffers from a major foot-in-the-mouth syndrome
In an era when stars mind their Ps and Qs to a T, Salman Khan loves being a brat. And we love him for it. For example, he made headlines when he shot the black buck in 1998. Did we descend on theatres screening his films and burn the reels? No. We went to watch him charm the ghaghras off Sonali Bendre in Hum Saath Saath Hain and Aishwarya Rai in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Both films were released a year later after the deer shooting incident. There was also a whispering campaign that a certain other Khan did the actual shooting because poaching runs in his royal blood. Generations of fans (as also dedicated film journalists) have grown up believing the myth.
In 2002, he rammed his Toyota Land Cruiser reportedly over pavement dwellers sleeping on the pavement. There was huge media frenzy over the event, which even prompted Salman to go on a cycling spree. Nowadays, he cycles even to far-off places like Karjat and Lonavala and his SUVs follow at a discrete distance. Anyway, did people stop watching Salman’s films after this manslaughter charge? No, we forgave him even then and shed copious tears when he went mad in Tere Naam (2003). Oh why did he lose his head? Oh why did he lose the girl? Oh why should Ravi Kissen get the girl by default?
Earlier, there were reports that he used to Dabangg… erm… bash-up his girlfriends. Did our arms twitch with righteous indication upon hearing that? No, we forgave him because, well, how dare any girl say no to Salman bhai who is just a child at heart. Dil toh bachcha hai ji. And it takes two to maaro taali, right. Just because he’s a macho man you can’t see the scars. But there are enough scars on his heart that those women have inflicted there. They probably drove him to extreme measures.
There were rumours that he has underworld links. Salman denied the allegations and we believed him. In Salman’s case, every girl he dates becomes our bhabhi. We love Somy bhabhi and Sangeeta bhabhi and Katrina bhabhi and Zarine bhabhi… and whoever comes next. They’ll continue to be our bhabhis forever.
Salman Khan the phenomenon arrived with a bang with Maine Pyar Kiya! The sight of a bare-chested hero fighting the villains drove women to frenzy and men to their gyms. Till today, 80-year old grandmothers shriek in tandem with their eight-year-old randdaughters when the muscle-bound hero rips off his shirt. It’s not that he has got the best body in business or the best looks… it’s just that God doused him with an extra dose of charisma while putting him together.
Another thing is that bhai doesn’t need big banners. The banners become big when bhai joins them. Like Sanjay Leela Bhansali became big when Salman joined him. Like Sohail Khan became big when bhai joined him or like how Arbaaz Khan became big after producing Dabangg. Perhaps that’s why bhai has decided to open his own production house because he can only grow bigger and better.
It’s not that Salman doesn’t have his lows. But even his lows get more mileage. Like Yuvvraaj is known as Subhash Ghai’s most glorious failure… or Veer will forever be known as Anil Sharma’s magnum opus – despite being a box-office dud.
People have tried to compare him to Rajesh Khanna. Unlike Khanna, who sank without a trace after the rise of the Bachchan phenomenon, Salman has always kicked back with a vengeance and asserted his superiority. People wrote him off after Patthar Ke Phool, he struck back with a Sanam Bewafa, people wrote him off after Veergati, he struck back with a Khamoshi…they wrote him off with Auzaar, he retaliated with Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya… they wrote him off with God Tussi Great Ho – he sallied back with Wanted. Unlike other stars, who are in constant need of revamping their careers, Salman goes retro and delivers the biggest opening of the season – Dabangg. That’s star power for you. Method acting be damned.
His real life is as whacky as his reel life. He can give a record-breaking hit and then go on some foreign channel and make inflammatory remarks. We love him because he doesn’t confirm. We hate him because he doesn’t confirm. We love him because he is a genuine superstar. We hate him because he isn’t actually taking cinema forward. We want him to settle down with some good girl. We will hate him if he actually does.
He is the last of the studs, the last caveman and we’d like to preserve him in a museum. Perhaps Madame Tussaud’s be commissioned to make a ‘real’ wax statue…. About time, no
